Back in the 60′s, a happening on the river usually was for some righteous cause.  Fast forward 40-50 years and we get unbridled consumption with a small nod to altruism.  That’s right folks, as if everything that I have been writing about the spectacular emergence of Long Island City wasn’t enough, now comes word that the famous Brooklyn Flea Market is coming here in June.  We are happy to be the first to report that it will be located on 46th Avenue and 5th Street, and will have a large Smorgasburg component to it.  That way you can eat a slow-cooked line-caught porgy pupusa slathered in homemade pickled wormjam, and drink an iced-chai-latte made with unpasteurized llama milk and tea leaves picked by a remote Himalayan tribe provided with access to the Mayo Clinic and a full pension at age 45, before you pay $2,600 for an art-deco foot stool replica.  No really, after this arrival, will there be any need to ever leave LIC???

What else new is happening in the neighborhood?  Alot of new building everywhere.  I hear that the first 11 floors of the third and soon-to-be completed TF Cornerstone building have already been leased, and the first eight floors on the fourth final building have been built.  Also, two notes from Jimmy Van Bramer’s office 1) He procured $10,000 for new trees in Shady Park and 2) They plan to open a Greenmarket on Vernon Blvd. and 48th Avenue “GrowNYC will be working with the LIC YMCA to recruit and train teens from LIC to operate the Youthmarket, a program of GrowNYC.  The proposed market would operate on Saturdays from 8am to 4pm from July 13th until November 23rd.”

Finally we come to schools, specifically PS78 and kindergarten.  LICtalk is holding off on writing anything in order to not disrupt the current channels of communication now occurring.  But for those interested, there are two items you should know about.  First is a meeting being held this Wednesday, April 10th, at 7pm in the Riverview Avalon building(south) lounge regarding transportation options to St. Stans in Greenpoint.  The second is the link to a New York Times Q&A with Robert Sanft, the chief executive of the Office of Student Enrollment in the city’s Education Department, which is open for questions right now!

Didn’t I hear that 5th Street was supposed to be turned into a one-way street last month? As of today it is still 2-way. I don’t know if that’s good or bad for all the traffic that will come with LICflea.

  2. LIC girl says:

I’m confused about the farmer’s market as there have been so many reports in the last three months. Wasn’t there supposed to be a weekday one too, with later hours so when people got home after work it would still be open? Has anything actually been confirmed or is this going to end up like all the street cleaning plans and come July nothing will be here?

  3. JJ says:

Forget about the friggin’ farmers market, the Flea Market coming to LIC is huge!!!!

    What’s a pupusa?

  5. Yum Yum says:

Not only is the Flea Market coming to LIC, it’s coming to a very accessible area in Hunters Point. Not some remote and vacant lot near Northern Boulevard.

  6. ? says:

Does the Brooklyn Flea sell alcohol(beer and wine) as well?

  7. Mark Kyton says:

FYI — The LIC Flea has no connection with the Brooklyn Flea.

  8. Anonymous Bosch says:

I don’t know about the Brooklyn Fleamarket, but Smorgasburg opened a roped off area for alcohol called SmorgasBar last summer.

  9. RepubLIC says:

The best part will be that Paxall will have floating beer boat connecting to this flea. If you know some wonderful vendors please let them know about this! It will be the best thing this summer in LIC!!!

Btw, there will be 2 farmers markets on 48th this summer!

  10. The Editor says:

Mark Kyton you are correct: The LIC Flea has no affiliation with the Brooklyn Flea Market. Thank you very much for the information.

That floating beer boat needs a lot of work. I’m not sure it’s in the cards for summer 2013.
