Don’t let anyone tell you nothing happens in August. Not in LIC anyway. Free Music, Free Yoga, + when you have a park like ours along the waterfront, who needs the beach? Then after sunset head up to Astoria for some of the best food on the planet, or to LIC Flea or Smorgasburg in Court Square. Here’s a rundown for the rest of the summer:
Free Music: Live at the Gantries continues until Labor Day with Tuesday night performances at 7pm and Sunday night performances at 5pm. In addition, there will be live music and/or DJ at LIC Landing’s event space, aka the Oval, Wednesday nights at 7pm. Finally, on Thursday, August 27, the Jonny Meyers trio will be playing at the Oval at 7pm. He’s a great local artist and he’ll be accompanied by horns at this show.
Here’s a little local tip: pick-up some Indian food from the cart guy on 48th Ave and Center Blvd, a beer from LIC Landing or Food Cellar, and eat al fresco while listening to live music.
Free Yoga: while we’re on the topic of India, there’s now more free outdoor yoga than ever before in LIC. In addition to our previous tweet about yoga on the Gantry Pier on August 16 @ 10am and September 6 @ 5:30pm, we got this little list from the Hunters Point Parks Conservancy:
Mondays: 6:30 PM with Sigrid Pichler (The Yoga Room): Aug 10, Aug 24, Aug 31
As for news, well that’s a different story. Nothing much is happening and I don’t expect it to, so I’ll be off to Mykonos for the next week. The Greeks could use my sage financial advice, and I’m deserving of their island hedonism.1
Where to Look at Art and Get Drunk – oh yeah, we also have MoMA PS1’s Warm-Up music series in LIC. Every Saturday afternoon and free to LIC residents
