We received a rumor that Cafe Henri is finalizing its plans to move out of its current location on Vernon Boulevard and into Related’s new building on Center Boulevard, Hunters Point Commons1.
In addition, we hear that it’s current home on Vernon will be demolished for a new six to eight story building. Sigh. Given the visibility, I think I know where Starbucks might establish it’s beachhead in Hunters Point, or maybe it’s kitty corner to this building, in which case I think I know where McD… Sigh.2
Given that we reported a year ago that Duane Reade is also coming into this Related building, that might leave one small retail space left there. Pizza or burgers?
//It was with sadness that I learned about the existence of the old Elks Lodge on 44th Drive …and it’s imminent demolition. Sigh. In tandem with the news above, it was a reminder that developers are slowly picking away at those few old, character laden buildings in LIC. Kinda like they’ve done with many of the dive bars in Manhattan.
So it was with glee that I spotted a neon sign for The Subway Inn around 59th Street and Second Avenue. I immediately recognized that this was the exact sign from its old location across from Bloomingdale’s, and the first bar one would see upon emerging from the NQ&R lines coming from Queensboro (and Queens) Plaza. Now, I’ll get to see it every time I make the turn onto the Queensboro Bridge. Sigh, such memories.
Oh, and one more thing, if you google the Subway Inn, you’ll notice that many of the images of it display a neon sign for the NY Mets in the front window. Now it may not be neon, but I’d say that is definitely a sign of divine intervention. Or at least I sure hope so, as I’ve got my kids tuition riding on it.

- These are just my musings, not even rumors. We’ve already reported the rumor that Starbucks has signed a lease in LIC, I highly doubt it’s waiting for this to be built. [↩]

October 28, 2015 at 4:00 pmWorkers in the Related building told me it was going to be a CVS or RiteAid, which makes sense, given that there’s a DR 4 blocks away

November 10, 2015 at 1:18 pmCafé Henri is not moving to center boulevard. They said they thought about it but the space was too small. They didn’t go through with it.
