It has finally come to this. The need for traffic safety measures has spurred a press event that will be held tomorrow, May 30, at 3pm on Center Boulevard and 48th Avenue. Who will be there? Everyone on the cover of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band and Jimmy Van Bramer. But for this to be effective, it will also require the people who it affects to attend. Because if we learned one lesson from the Avonte episode, it is the need for citizen’s to take matters into their own hands if they want to spur any reaction from the government bureaucracy. Fortunately, a dedicated group has been organizing and pushing this issue. So pull those pitchforks and torches out of the closet, it’s time for the quarterly LIC protest.
The other piece of big news in LIC this week, is that De Blasio has decided to accelerate the development of Hunters Point South. According to Crain’s:
“The city is moving forward with a nearly $100 million construction project to build both a new waterfront park and a series of roads, water mains and sewer lines that will eventually support the final buildings of the initiative. On Friday, the city’s Economic Development Corp. issued a request for proposals for part of the job.”
It was only back in December that Bloomberg announced the developer on phase 2 of HPS. Friday’s request will lay the groundwork for the final phase, which will add 3,000 more units to the project.
Taste of LIC is next Tuesday, June 3. Did you get the early bird $50 tickets we told you about six weeks ago? How about after that? If not, you have one last chance to snag a ticket by tomorrow, and even at $60 it’s a bargain! Go here to do so.
Oh, so you want more bargains? Here’s a reminder of three other free local activities this weekend:
Kick it LIC – kids soccer program, Sunday at 10am at the Oval in HPS
YMCA Cardio Dance and/or Kids Fitness – Saturday at 10am, Gantry Park at 48th Ave
LIC Boathouse Kayaking Tour – Sunday 10am, see link below for more info
Center Boulevard Press Event Info and Petition – someone else did all the heavy lifting, all you need to do is sign-up and/or show-up
City Moves Forward on Hunters Point South – probably won’t help anyone reading this, but 3000 more affordable, luxurious apartments coming to LIC
With New Slant on Subway Elevators, Expect Delays – the 7-train extension to the Javits Center, which was supposed to ready by the end of 2013, is delayed by a year due to funky elevators. Sounds like the same geniuses who chose the sprinklers at Gantry Park.
LIC Boathouse – Sunday paddle from Anable Basin
LIC Emerging Artists Festival – June 6-13, don’t know much about this
