Half a lifetime ago, I backpacked around Europe. There were no smartphones, there was no Yelp or Expedia, nor were there no laptops or internet cafes. There was simply a book, a single book, that every other young person touring the world carried in their luggage and consulted as if it were the bible in order to find the best $6 hotel room in any given city, and the cheapest beer. Back then, never in my wildest dreams1 could I have imagined I would one day be living in a small two-bedroom apartment in Queens, NY with two midgets running around, and paying over twenty times that nightly rate just to do so. Yet here I am. So the fact that that bible, Lonely Planet, just named Queens, NY its top destination in the U.S., doesn’t really come as a surprise. Nor should it to any reader of LICtalk, even those who came of age whilst Skyping, texting, and Facebooking their way through their college semester abroad.
