WARM weather notwithstanding, all signs point to Fall. The days are shorter, the sun is positioned lower, and come the weekend the weather will get in line. Of course in addition to the Autumnal Equinox officially telling us it’s so, in LIC there’s another sign: UN Week and all the police boats flashing their blue lights at night on the East River. Yeah, we’re pretty important people to be receiving all that security.
Though I do wish that I had been invited to the diplomats bash at Four Freedoms Park Wednesday night, at least the live band echoed perfectly across the water. Which spun me into a fantasy land where I imagined wearing a dashiki and carrying my high school French phrase book to share bon mots with young attaches from Cote D’Ivoire and other people with complete immunity.
And so it was in my receiving a note and a press release announcing a Peace Lanterns Festival coming to Gantry Plaza State Park. It’s this Sunday, September 25 from 2:30-8:30, open to everyone, and best of all the invite comes with the patina of the United Nations stamped all over it. In addition to a keynote speech by Ambassador Anwarul K. Chowdhury, High Representative to the U.N.1, other notable diplomat-ish attendees include Alejandro Laguna, Imam Shamsi Ali, Bhante Homagama Kandanna Bhikku, and Rev. TK Nakagaki.
The actual lantern festival, where they release a whole bunch of small candle-lit boats on the water, starts at 7:30 pm. Prior to that, in addition to speeches and meditation, there will be lantern decorating, painting, and public paddling by the gantries. Hmm, sounds pretty spiritual and kinky – count me in.
