FATAL SHOOTING AND LIBRARY DELAYS IN LIC

Law & Order

WHAT a day in LIC.  It started early this morning at the Queensboro Correctional Facility where a guard who worked there ran down the street firing shots at her ex-boyfriend before turning the gun on herself.  Due to bullets splaying all over the place and the eventual dramatic suicide, the story was widely reported on by NYC media within hours of its occurring.

More interesting to local readers, is a) the existence of this prison, and b) its location.  The latter can best be described to locals as being backed onto by LaGuardia College, whose entrance is on Thomson Avenue/Queens Boulevard; or if you prefer, around the corner from the City Ice Pavilion.  As for its presence, this innocuous looking building is described by the New York Post in the story below as “a minimum-security prison that acts as a re-entry center for male inmates. It has a capacity for 416 inmates.”  Ehh, I never would have known it was there, so for something like this it’s probably well-situated.

//CLOSER to home, DNA Info reports that the Hunters Point Library will be delayed until late 2017 or early 2018 due to Spanish glass.  Actually, the glass was manufactured in Germany and was sent to Spain for glazing where a siesta took hold.  Anyway that’s more info than I want to know other than that the expected Fall 2017 opening has once again been pushed back. Ay Caramba!

Corrections Officer Shoots at Ex Before Killing Herself“As soon as I parked I got out to check myself to see if I got hit, and then I heard three shots more and I heard somebody scream, ‘Call an ambulance! She shot herself,’”

Delayed Glass Shipment From Spain Holds Up Library Opening“City Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer, who represents the area, blasted the DDC for the opening delay, saying the agency is “unable to adhere to timelines they themselves set.”"

Didn’t know it was there? Com’on Editor! Walk the streets a bit more. Grab a taco from Unico while you’re at it.
