New York’s got the ways and means; but just won’t let you be, oh no
No New Yorker would ever think of partying in Times Square. In the not-too-distant future, I think it will be fair to say that no New Yorker would actually want to live in Manhattan. It’s where the tourists live. For the last decade, Brooklyn has been the place to which NY’ers have decamped to in order to 1) get more for their money and 2) retain their hipness. Recently though, real estate prices in select parts of Brooklyn have eclipsed those in certain areas of Manhattan1. Moreover, being hip is overrated, especially after one changes their first dozen baby diapers.
That leaves Queens as the new, new thing. First off, it’s the last place within very close proximity to midtown where real estate is still inexpensive. Second, as we wrote about last year: Brooklyn has jumped the shark, and while it is easy to cut down a neighbor, one also has to make an argument as to why Queens is now the place to be. Or in my case just borrow someone else’s articulate rationale, so here is Timeout New York’s:
“Once you cross the Pulaski Bridge, something magical happens: $200 gets shaved off your average monthly rent. And wait, what happened to that cloud of pretension? Oh, that’s right. You’re in Queens, home to some of the coolest spots in the city … There’s Brooklyn, and then there’s the idea of Brooklyn. But Queens is just…Queens!”
Now let’s turn our sights to Long Island City. Here is what we know: it has the best commute, parks and views in Queens. Here is what will be, especially for kids, if we get it right: great schools, sports programs, and facilities.2 As an added kicker, our good friend capitalism is starting to bring some new and interesting restaurants to the neighborhood.
Most importantly, Long Island City is the home of the best website on the planet. Bringing you important information such as:
