The Oval in Hunters Point South is two and a half miles from the Manhattan Bridge, and the shortest distance between Queens and the northern most fireworks barge in this year’s Macy’s Fourth of July Fireworks display. With that in mind, to what extent will those staying in Long Island City for the Fourth actually be able to see the fireworks? Frankly I haven’t a clue. So I’ve decided not to gamble, and instead have leased my friend Roman’s yacht to get me and one hundred of my nearest and dearest in the mix, after which we’ll hightail it down to Rio for the World Cup Finals.1 As for those contemplating staying in Long Island City for the show, will it be worth it?
Hmm, local Queens politicians seemed pretty excited about the return of the fireworks to the East River when it was announced by Mayor De Blasio in April. Of course incorporating their enthusiasm into your weekend plans might be like taking Bernanke, Geithner, and Paulson’s word that the subprime contagion wouldn’t spread. You say what you gotta say given the situation. Sorry I can’t be of anymore help on this matter, anyone else have some thoughts?

June 25, 2014 at 9:04 pmDoes anyone know whether it will be worthwhile inviting friends to LIC to see the fireworks? I am debating if iI should have a little party or not, and if I do will it be kind of a letdown because the fireworks appear puny.

June 26, 2014 at 10:50 amthe “east river” fireworks are now the “brooklyn fireworks”. you can take the mayor out of brooklyn ,but you can’t take brooklyn out of the mayor. the only barge in manhattan will be by the manhattan bridge –either go there or turn on the tv!!!!!

June 26, 2014 at 1:14 pmI am afraid you’re right rmh, but the crowds will still come to LIC anyway. I think you’re better off telling your friends to skip it Missy.
