The kind of mate I’m contemplating
I’d let you watch, I would invite you
But the queens we use would not excite you
Almost 2 1/2 years ago a new restaurant landed on Vernon Boulevard with hardly a peep. In the ensuing period it has catered to many a diner, yet still without any fanfare or buzz. Sure, it’s a shoebox of a space with no name on the door or facade and it doesn’t even have a website, but if anything that mystery should make it more newsworthy – look at all the attention given to ‘Stop’ signs by the press in this neighborhood. Plus it’s on a pretty heavily trafficked block of Vernon Boulevard.
So today we present the first official recognition of Sushi Daizen by a major news organization. Though we don’t write actual reviews in LICtalk, we will reveal a bit of the mystery behind the beige wooden door.
As many probably know, the restaurant offers omakase, which is basically the chef’s sushi tasting menu. The small menu consists of two choices, 10-piece omakase for $75 or Sashimi and 6-piece omakase for $90. While that may sound like a lot, this isn’t your conventional sushi joint and from what I understand it’s actually very reasonably priced for this type of cuisine, and a price-point that attracts serious sushi fans from all over the city.
Was it awesome? I’m not the right person to answer that, but the friendly local couple next to us said they ate at Sushi Daizen every chance they got. To this novice there was no doubt the fish was a cut above the usual fare, with a good mix of familiar and not-so-familiar items. Despite the seeming pretentiousness of being discreet, the service was friendly and relaxed. Also, unlike other similarly priced restaurants in this city, the drink options were reasonably priced and thus the final tally didn’t leave me with indigestion after imbibing quite a bit.
I’ll leave out the details of the raucous ending to the night involving a lawyer from Astoria buying a round of drinks for all leading to a heated argument which the aforementioned local couple got caught between. But a good time was had by everyone and we all hugged it out in the end on the Boulevard de Vernon. Just another night in Sushi Daizen.

August 16, 2018 at 10:06 amThere are other apartments being built, as well as empty hotels that end up used for homeless shelters. There’s no reason to have a huge complex of poor people all in one spot, on underutilized prime real estate. Queensbridge is the largest public housing in North America.
