No more pencils
No more books
No more teacher’s dirty looks
Out for summer
Out till fall
We might not go back at all
There’s only one more week left for children attending local public schools. Unless of course you take a page from The Editor and are forced to go to summer school. Or go to one of those expensive learning camps that advertise being a funnel for early admission to Harford. As for the rest of the kids, summer begins at noon on Friday, June 26.
//As a follow-up to my real e-state post earlier in the week, comes two well written outside articles about similar neighborhoods, Jersey City and Roosevelt Island. Both of these should be considered were one to desire buying an apartment in LIC, but it being too much of a financial stretch. My quick thoughts on the two are that Jersey City becomes very attractive for those working downtown, because it’s all about the commute. In addition to prices being considerably lower than LIC, another advantage is the already built out restaurant and retail scenes. Disadvantages include the inferiority of the local public schools, and that it’s not as neighborhood-y and walkable.
Roosevelt Island definitely has an abundance of the latter, but it’s almost too cloistered and incestuous. Also, as mentioned in the article, the local shops and services are very limited and the isolation of being on an island makes all other commerce difficult, with or without a car. Plus, I think our parks and views are better, and our commute decidedly so in almost every circumstance1. Finally, while home prices are only 15-20% less than in LIC, you do get good schools with a lot of neighborhood input.
//Talking about summer, yesterday the 108th precinct put fliers on every car announcing there would be no parking on any streets in Hunters Point between Vernon Blvd and the river for the full 24 hours of July 4th day. In addition, the 108th has declared the area a “Frozen Zone,” and there will be no vehicular traffic whatsoever from 1pm onwards on July 4. Hmm, sounds like a summer version of Times Square New Year’s Eve. Be prepared.
After Looking Everywhere, a Jersey City Condo – former LIC waterfront residents buy a 2-br in a walk-up in JC for $432K. Unfortunately they disregarded it being all about the commute, but still a good deal
Roosevelt Island: ‘A Small Town from the Twilight Zone’ – excellent encapsulation of what it’s like to live there: “… it used to be un-thought of to walk by and not say hi to your neighbors.” She finds now that’s not the case, though, “It’s sorta more awkward.” Although Lakan has noticed a change in the intimacy of the community, she admits it was a cool place to grow up in. “There were tons of activities for kids,” remembers Lakan, “There’s a lot of communal spaces that we all used to play in.”
