LIC’s Pepsi sign and almost a hundred other sites may lose their no-tear-down status. In a year end rush to take things off its plate, the Landmarks Preservation Committee is taking a page from municipal pension plans by simply removing these locations from its calendar, instead of actually rendering a decision.
You can read all about this legerdemain in the lengthy (but newsworthy) article from DNA Info below. My guess is that, with or without landmark status, our iconic sign is ok. Like most decisions in this city, it wouldn’t be demolished without the consent of the developer whom it affects most. In this case, TF Cornerstone knows a great marketing shtick when they see one, and wouldn’t do anything stupid. Right?
//Sunnyside Yards Re-Development gets a new advocate in Dan Doctoroff. Though he’s probably best known for spearheading the failed bid to put a stadium on the west side, that hasn’t stopped Doctoroff from proposing a new, even bigger development. I haven’t arrived at an opinion yet about this proposal, first put forth two months ago. Yet I can’t help but feel that the huge scope, complex logistics, and lengthy timetable (leading to lack of accountability and fingerpointing) involved, will turn it into NYC’s version of the Big Dig.
