Even in the final days of summer, when all eyes and bodies should be at the beach, the news is dominated by real estate in LIC. Lots of development updates, topping offs, and new renderings. One data point, indicative of nothing really, is how the highest priced “home”1 ever offered in Long Island City, or Queens for that matter, listed exactly two years ago at $8 million, has gone through three sets of brokers and can be had today for $4.65 million. In a similar vein, a beautiful townhouse that we thought would be a good deal if gotten for $4.5 million roughly six months ago, StreetEasy shows recently closing at $3.88 million. Ok that’s two data points, and even though you may be thinking something about the high end of the market being toppy or even ‘LIC Glut,’ it’s my belief that these apartments, especially the first, had outlier pricing – if they caught a buyer at those prices they were sold, otherwise the owners were happy to hold on. Unfortunately, just like the summer, those days are almost over.
//Ramen Shack is coming to LIC in September – forget about hot noodles in a bowl, this guy is the originator of the Ramen Burger. According to Gothamist:
“Keizo Shimamoto has been hard at work creating interesting ramen all over the city in the past few years, popping up at places like Smorgasburg and elsewhere. Now, he’s got a new permanent space to showcase his flavorful and fun noodle soups and the full roster of Shimamoto’s proprietary Ramen Burgers. Opening week of September 26th at 13-13 40th Avenue in Long Island City”
That location is in no-man’s land a block or two north of the bridge, but Grub-Hub and Seamless have already set up their templates so you won’t be denied your fill on the cold winter nights ahead.
//Many parents in LIC, especially those of young girls, were recently disappointed to find out that the Fall schedule of classes for the Jessica Lang Dance Center was canceled due to a delay in the opening of the Center. Why not turn lemons into lemonade and consider enrolling your kids in the Long Island City Soccer Club? Their Fall season takes place on Sundays at the QueensWest Field across from PS78Q. Best of all, if enough girls sign up they will hold simultaneous sessions for boys and girls instead of a single co-ed one. For more information contact Lajos Geenen at lajosgeenen@gmail.com
//Tomorrow night Silent Disco is coming back to LIC, courtesy of Lincoln Center. At this all-ages party, DJs broadcast disco, salsa, and dance hits directly to your headphones. Admission is free on a first come, first served basis (there were waiting lines last year). Bring a credit card or an ID to borrow headphones for the evening.
//For 51 weeks a year I toil 24/7 to bring the people of Long Island City the local information and insight they so desire. I run all over town tracking down stories, and then sweat blood agonizing over every written word.
Next week I will not be doing such. Instead, in order to regain my strength and refocus my efforts for another year of battle, I will be traveling afar and leaving this all behind. Actually, I’m taking the 7-train to Flushing, where there exists the only “clinic” willing to allow me to spend the entire week in a sensory-deprivation chamber. It’s monitored by a red monkey who’s under explicit instructions not to disturb me unless one of the interns at LICtalk sends a ‘code red’ indicating a 2-standard deviation story is brewing at home. Otherwise you will not be hearing from The Editor next week.

Shot in the Heart at the Pierce-Arrow Building – saving the best for last, a fascinating lesson for LIC history buffs
- it’s currently cut up into multi-apartments, but at just under 5,000 square really comes across as a single-family home for any respectable person w/ help and all, right? [↩]
