Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery that mediocrity can pay to greatness – Oscar Wilde
ALL of LIC is eagerly awaiting the arrival of J.Lo tonight. Not only does it re-confirm our town as the center of the universe, but it’s also the start of the biggest weekend of the year here – not to mention the weekend in general. In that manner, might “J.Lo” be a metaphor for life?
While Jennifer Lopez is a huge star and a consummate professional, that can’t necessarily be said for a select few in the local media who cover her whereabouts. While I’m ecstatic that LICtalk got the big scoop on J.Lo’s appearance here, I’m equally appalled by those usurping big headlines non attributionis.1 As I’ve already stated before, you’re more than welcome to blandly regurgitate my sloppy seconds, but your actions, or lack thereof, will not go unnoticed by The Editor! The only question that remains is whether you contacted your well placed source after reading about it in LICtalk, or is it that your well placed source actually is LICtalk?
//GAZING south from Hunters Point recently, one cannot help but notice two large towers currently being erected in Greenpoint. Today we learn that at the base of the one that has topped out and is almost completed, Marcus Samuelsson will be opening a large waterfront restaurant. Known as the owner of Red Rooster in Harlem and previously as the innovative chef at Aquavit, the cuisine type or timeline of this new venture has not been determined at this time.
//SUN shades on local playgrounds – seems like a good idea right? From such straightforward logic comes action by a local mother named Tali Vaknin. She’s put together a petition requesting sun shades on the playgrounds along the waterfront in LIC. Tali cites it as a way to reduce skin cancer later in life and mentioned the added effects of it simply being more comfortable for children and their caretakers during the summer months when the playgrounds are packed not only with kids from LIC but all parts of Queens as well. LICtalk has previously tried to rally people to this cause and is glad to see someone taking on the mantle. After you succeed in this Tali, how about doing likewise for a rec center?
//THREE local notes before we delve into the weekend – first, the showing of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory at the oval that was postponed by rain last week will occur on Friday, July 21. Secondly, the LIC Flea will have a special July Fourth Night Market from 2pm – 11:30pm that day. Finally, stay tuned to LICtalk for all the Long Island City 4th of July news coverage this weekend – we’re going nowhere.
Jennifer Lopez, Sheryl Crow, & More to Perform in LIC For Macy’s Fourth of July Fireworks Show – see, here’s how to attribute a story correctly. Not too painful is it, or maybe it is?
LIC Neighbors Fight for View During Fireworks Show – oh please, you can still watch it from your apartment or easily go to a neighbor’s rooftop. Did you really think it entitled you to VIP passes? Did you really think the gated construction lot across the street was going to open its doors just for you? I’m so sorry that you’ll have to mix w/ the hoi-polloi to watch the fireworks or be slightly inconvenienced
