I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again:
While Amazon HQ2 may or may not be a good deal for NYC, there is no question it’s a great deal for LIC.
Now that Amazon has called their bluff, it’s time for the two anti-HQ2 politicians representing Long Island City to stop grandstanding and come to the table with specific asks. Preferably ones that the neighborhood is rallying for and have so far been fully ignored by Amazon de Cuomo, such as a Rec Center and new High School1.
Whether it be polls or rallies, the numbers opposing the deal have ranged from decided minority to sparse. Now I hear a groundswell in opposition to the opposition is forming, and while it may be fomented by local businesses small and not-so, I’ve personally heard from a lot of individuals who feel the resistance movement does not represent their feelings in any way. Are the politicians really going to force their constituents to march/protest in order to show their support for the largest corporation in America? In the meantime there’s a petition circulating doing just that:
Petition Supporting Amazon in Long Island City – started by a group calling itself LIC Supports Amazon
Facing Opposition Amazon Reconsiders Putting Headquarters in LIC – as originally reported Friday in The Washington Post

February 12, 2019 at 10:51 pmSome more good news today for New York City…
Jim Stewart on Squawk on the Street today: “What does it say to other companies who might be thinking about expanding/moving to NYC? If they did, would be contributing to the tax base and would be helping to ease the pressure on everybody else. What message does this send about how welcoming NY is going to be to somebody who wants hire a lot of people, come here and employ them and pay a lot of taxes? It’s a terrible message!. I think if they (Amazon) pull out its going to be a disaster for New York City.”
