The fat lady is clearing her throat.  According to the Times Ledger, the demolition of 5Pointz will begin in August per the owner Jerry Wolkoff.  He also stated that he expects the two 40+ story rental towers to be completed in 2016.  Someday will we gaze upon the towers and think of them as the majestic gateway to Queens as we did with 5Pointz?  Highly unlikely, but what can we do?

In a completely unrelated (and overlooked) development, Mu Ramen expects to open their second location in Boston next year.  Someday, after they conquer the planet and put a Mu on every corner, may people look back and think of LIC in the way they think of Starbucks and Seattle? DINING AL FRESCO IN LONG ISLAND CITY

LIC’s 2014 Spring battle over the use of restaurant’s backyards, has gotten citywide attention now that summer is here.  Yesterday, The Daily News published an article highlighting Alobar’s and 51st Bakery & Cafe rejections so far of their use.  Adding fuel to the fire, the story disclosed that:

“The Buildings Department approved plans at 51st Bakery and Café and then backpedaled after receiving an anonymous complaint saying the business did not have a proper certificate of occupancy to open the garden.”

Hmm, the timing sounds a little fishy to me, might it be an inside job?

Anyway, while Community Board 2 is still in its exploratory phase regarding the use of restaurant’s backyards ((which is expected to be completed around the same time as the library)), there are a few new options for dining al fresco this summer. Nothing puts a town on the map like a local bakery.  Astoria has Rose and Joe’s, a traditional old-school Italian bakery.  Greenpoint has Peter Pan, an old-fashioned donut shop manned by young Polish women in uniforms.  Williamsburg has Fortunato Brothers, a pasticerria that transports you back to 1970’s Brooklyn, and where cannolis are to dessert, what pasta is to dinner: a midway point.  As in “I’ll have the tiramisu and a slice of cheesecake, and throw in a cannoli …or two.” [Read more…] about LONG ISLAND CITY: SOON TO BE A 3-BAKERY TOWN

Last week, the LICpost wrote two solid articles about the inability of local restaurant owners to access their backyards. Basically, there has been one long time member of Community Board 2, who due to his not wanting outdoor seating adjacent to his own back windows, has used his position on the board to block any restaurants in Hunters Point from doing so.  This is a long term battle he has waged, and you can read about the start of it back in 2003 right here.
