HUNTERS POINT LIBRARY TO BE NAMED AFTER TRUMP

Long Island City's Taj Mahal — Will Long Island City’s Taj Mahal be an oxymoron?

The nearly completed Hunters Point Library along the waterfront in Long Island City will be re-christened in honor of Queens most famous native son. The Queens Library has announced that the new building will be given the name ‘Trump Library’ when it is finished later this year, and that barring any unforeseen circumstances the president will be in attendance for the grand opening and naming ceremony in September.

Have you ever walked by a building in Long Island City and thought “I wonder who owns it?” or “How does it remain ‘as is’ in light of all the changes going on in the neighborhood/city?” Real estate investing is idiosyncratic. CONFESSION: I’ve never actually been to a MoMA PS1 Warm Up. I’ve talked about it a lot, I’ve walked by MoMA PS1 while it’s been going on and noted the crowds, but for one feeble reason or another I have yet to actually enter the premises during showtime. This year, in order to make up for past absences, I have decided to go whole hog and run the table by attending every session. Best of all, in celebration of Warm Up’s 20th year, MoMA PS1 is making an offer I, and everyone else, can’t refuse: the “1998 ticket package,” which gets you all ten shows for only $98 ((actually, it used to be free for all LIC residents, which if it still is, makes this blurb irrelevant)) – all that’s missing is a discounted beer flight for the season. Anyway, while the line up has yet to be released, it is interesting to note from the article below, that the series has oodles of curators, as only a museum sponsored music show would.

QP’s MARKETPLACE, CUE THE MEMORIES OF 80’S LIC

Where one time we lusted for black concert t-s, now we want grasshopper tacos

Recently, an old friend who grew up in Queens, shared with me her main recollection of coming to Long Island City back in her youth. It centered around subway rides to Queens Plaza to shop at a crowded flea market called QP’s Market Place, in order to purchase the 80’s teenage equivalent of Snapchat: black concert t-shirts.

Hmm, I thought, given the retailing magnet that this place was for someone living all the way on the other side of Queens, and the nostalgia people of a certain era have for physical locations that sold highly discounted and possibly semi-illicit merchandise, maybe the venue deserved a short profile?

Instead, a quick google turned up a historical treasure trove about the site that the market was located on. And previous chroniclers have already performed extensive spadework and risked limbs for cool photos. So to entice you to read their fantastic posts on it, I’ll share some interesting tidbits.
