Next Tuesday, September 22, at 6pm there will be a Participatory Budgeting (PB) neighborhood assembly in the auditorium at PS78Q. ((the one on 5th Street)) PB is where our local councilman lets you decide how to spend $1 million on community improvements to parks, schools, libraries, streets, and more. It’s not quite that simple, there’s a whole process in place to make sure it doesn’t end up in your Uncle Lou the contractor’s pocket, but it’s the starting point for ideas. Tomorrow is the first day of school for NYC public school students. After putting in a solid three days, those kids will then get a 4-day weekend due to Rosh Hashanah. Then it’s back to the grindstone for three days, only to have yet another 3-day school week in week three of the school year due to Yom Kippur and the newly added Eid Al Adha.
Back when I went to school, all these holidays would have been a blessing. Not because of their significance, but due the work and school mantra: a bad day on the golf course (or playground), is better than…

Well I’ve been training all summer for the monumental bike ride across the Queensboro Bridge. After many years of living in its shadow, it was time to take on the beast and journey across the river to the outer borough of Manhattan in something other than the subway or a taxi. So this weekend I ventured forth, first stopping at Sweetleaf to down a quart of coffee, then pausing in Queens Plaza to gobble two Clif Bars. Finally I strapped on my helmet and started pedaling up the eastern face. It was hot out and I had to rest several times and catch my breath, not unusual for most mountaineers, but 40 minutes later with my hamstrings screaming, I hit the apex. The trip down to the other side was quicker and less traumatic, at the bottom of the bridge I made a sharp right turn onto East 60th Street proudly hitting the island of Manhattan in a triumphal manner, and do you know what I discovered when I got there?
