: School’s out, the weekend has begun

No more pencils
No more books
No more teacher’s dirty looks

Out for summer
Out till fall
We might not go back at all

There’s only one more week left for children attending local public schools. Unless of course you take a page from The Editor and are forced to go to summer school. Or go to one of those expensive learning camps that advertise being a funnel for early admission to Harford. As for the rest of the kids, summer begins at noon on Friday, June 26.

Despite headlines in the last week declaring record highs, I predict that over the next 12 months supply will finally overtake demand in the NYC residential sector. The high level of current building activity and the expected number of units to be completed in the next year are easily evident to any layman who looks at the skyline or at street level, and/or to anyone reading mainstream local news, where real estate increasingly competes with sports as the lead topic around town. Requiring a little more analysis and maybe a hunch or two, I believe demand will start tailing off from its furious pace due to the recently stronger dollar, the smaller base of 20-somethings still living at home and then spinning off seven years after the ’08 crash, and the fact that this city will see diminished demand by college graduates due to it’s being so much more expensive to live in than comparables.

Tomorrow, June 13, is the 80th Anniversary of one of the the greatest upsets in boxing history, and it occurred in a venue called the Madison Square Garden Bowl right here in Long Island City. The two fighters were Max Baer, the heavyweight champion of the world at that time, and James J. Braddock, a 10-1 underdog who two years prior was working the docks as a longshoreman.

A little Bombay comes to the corner of 48th and Center — A little Bombay comes to the corner of 48th Ave and Center Blvd

There’s a new dining option for the residents of Hunters Point. A large food cart serving Indian food has appeared on the corner of 48th Avenue and Center Boulevard. It is called Mysstik Masaala and is owned and operated by a native Mumbai resident named Yuvaraaj.

Here at LICtalk, we receive plenty of correspondence from the neighborhood wanting to know more about the man behind the curtain. I’m not talking about emails or tweet-to’s, I mean long-form hard copy such as love letters, sometimes even with drawings …and cookies.

Despite a longstanding journalistic policy at this site to prevent the reporter from becoming the story, the public outcry has been so great, that the publisher has made the decision to broach the fourth wall and allow The Editor to answer your questions as posed in an interview with Katie Couric.
