The Fourth Annual LIC Arts Open begins today and runs through Sunday. The five-day event includes art exhibitions, a roster of innovative dance, theater and music performances, and a host of children’s activities. Events are almost all free. For this year’s main event, Open Studios (May 17 and 18), over 160 artists will open their studio doors to offer visitors a glimpse into the seldom seen world of the artist at work.

Mother’s Day has come and gone, and that’s as good a time as any to make my 2014 Long Island City real estate assessments and predictions. ROCKAWAY BREWING COMPANY EXPANDS IN LONG ISLAND CITY

Bigger brewhouse, more fermenters, lotsa good beer

Rockaway Brewing Company has expanded its operations in LIC. They have added a 5-barrel brewhouse to their existing 2-barrel one, which in tandem with a whole slew of new fermenters, will lead to a big increase to their current volume. Of equal importance, they now have a lot more space than their previously cramped environs, having pushed through the wall to the adjacent building. Nothing sells copy like sex, thus the headline above. I’m not the only sensationalist journalist though, as similar headlines about this affair were scripted in England, France, and Australia. Yes, it is true, a female principal of a school in LIC allegedly did some naughty things on school property with multiple partners, but that high school is near LaGuardia CC and I doubt many of the readers in this rag would care. New York’s got the ways and means; but just won’t let you be, oh no

No New Yorker would ever think of partying in Times Square. In the not-too-distant future, I think it will be fair to say that no New Yorker would actually want to live in Manhattan. It’s where the tourists live. For the last decade, Brooklyn has been the place to which NY’ers have decamped to in order to 1) get more for their money and 2) retain their hipness. Recently though, real estate prices in select parts of Brooklyn have eclipsed those in certain areas of Manhattan ((Williamsburg vs. the UES for example)). Moreover, being hip is overrated, especially after one changes their first dozen baby diapers.
