No picture today, there’s nothing to take one of
The Chinese water torture demise of 5Pointz began today. Many major press outlets picked the story up, I linked to one below. What’s most interesting to me is how many different times and ways the fat lady has sung for the building. The media, including LICtalk, has really milked this story, with the winding legal system getting an assist. Anyway it pops up once again in the headlines, which is not surprising for the typically slow news period that is late August.
Summers end or not, the Long Island City real estate machine gathers no moss. Just as Linc LIC announces they have completely leased up, like a weed another new Court Square development commences renting. In fact for those of you stuck in town this weekend, the leasing debut of that building, 26-14 Jackson Avenue, is offering a “boozy brunch” this Saturday, August 23, between 11am and 4pm. Giving one an opportunity to gawk at real estate porn, and drink free booze during the day time …oh wait, it said brunch, I think that means there will be some food too. Even if there’s not, it’ll probably make you feel a little less bad about that hole being created a few doors down on Jackson.
And if that doesn’t cheer you up after this sad day, we’ve got some more arts, or at least entertainment, news for you. Thanks to our clout-wielding, arts-yielding city councilman, there will be a free Silent Disco on the East River waterfront on September 12.
“Once again I am proud to bring one of Lincoln Center’s most innovative and interactive cultural programs to the Borough of Queens,” says New York City Council Majority Leader Jimmy Van Bramer. “…not only is this programming fun but it gets our community grooving to the sounds and performances of some of the world’s most premiere artists. There’s no better way to enjoy your Friday night than by dancing the night away with family and friends while enjoying sweeping views along the East River in Long Island City as the sun sets.”
Lincoln Center Local’s Silent Disco will open at 5:30 pm, and the dance lesson will start at 6:00 pm, given by professional dance instructor Diane Nardone. Beginning at 7:00 pm, dancers will start dancing to the music being fed into the wireless headphones they were given when they arrived. While casual observers see a seemingly odd public ritual as dancers revel to the “silent” beats, the dancers are actually a part of an exhilarating public/private dance party. Two DJs – Bill Coleman and hustle mainstay Bobby Morales – will spin different sets in each headphone channel, creating simultaneous and ever-shifting dance parties. The dancing will continue until 10:00 pm.
