The fat lady is clearing her throat. According to the Times Ledger, the demolition of 5Pointz will begin in August per the owner Jerry Wolkoff. He also stated that he expects the two 40+ story rental towers to be completed in 2016. Someday will we gaze upon the towers and think of them as the majestic gateway to Queens as we did with 5Pointz? Highly unlikely, but what can we do?
In a completely unrelated (and overlooked) development, Mu Ramen expects to open their second location in Boston next year. Someday, after they conquer the planet and put a Mu on every corner, may people look back and think of LIC in the way they think of Starbucks and Seattle? Most likely, but no definitive word from the founders on when their first restaurant will open here, though it was slated for this summer.
Planet of the Apes is killing it at the box office this summer. Which is what you would expect from a movie franchise originally filmed in Long Island City1. You did not know this? Then you must be a new reader of this esteemed publication, because we uncovered this story back in the depths of the bitter cold winter. Read all about it here. Someday, when the “Planet” prophesies have come to be realized, will LIC be where the second coming occurs? Yes absolutely, at which point I will finally realize $3,000 a square foot for my small basement studio near the post office.
In the meantime, catch the next LeBron Jordan at the YMCA of LIC’s 3×3 basketball tournament this weekend on the courts by 48th Avenue. If you are the next LeBron, recruit your Pippen and Wade and contact Bill Elkins at the Y to sign-up: welkins@ymcanyc.org

July 21, 2014 at 1:49 pmNot yet, but one is coming to LIC shortly. It will be located on Jackson Avenue and was originally scheduled to open this month. After Pete Wells of The Times named it his number one ramen location (back when it was only a pop-up store in Bricktown Bagels), I expect it’s grand opening to generate an enormous amount of press, as well as long lines.
