WELL the sad news in-waiting has now come to pass: Tuk Tuk will close its doors after 15+ years on Vernon Boulevard. But as avid readers here know, we have an informal section we call ‘One Closes/One Opens’ at LICtalk, and today’s post fits that bill, and a whole lot more.
Spicy Moon Vegan Szechuan has opened in Long Island City. Located at 45-04 Pearson Street in Court Square, this is the fifth restaurant in this mini-chain, and the first outside of Manhattan. I happened into the Chelsea branch this summer, and it is really good. I’ll leave it to you to peruse the menu below, but we may have to update our ‘Best Vegetarian Items in LIC‘ given this news.
//ONE suggestion that has been passed on regarding helping out local restaurants, is to order directly from their websites in order to bypass some/all of the delivery fees of middlemen such as DoorDash and GrubHub.
//Pursuit, a tech workforce training and job placement organization in Long Island City, is being given $10 million by NYS to create a Queens-based AI Jobs Institute, with the goal of connecting New Yorkers too often left out of the tech economy to emerging AI careers. Sounds good to me, and it’s right here in LIC. The JACX Building to be exact, because it has also been announced that Pursuit has signed a new lease to move their HQ into two floors there.
//HALLOWEEN in LIC: Yes, the Halloween ‘Parade’ will take place on Vernon Boulevard on Halloween Day this year. That’s October 31 for those of you just visiting US shores for the first time, from 3pm-5pm. At this point I have been writing about Halloween in LIC for time immemorial. Someone should really collate all of my scribblings on this topic, bind them, and put them in every hotel room in the USA. Disciples anyone, profit motive is fine? Of greater relevance, I have also been writing about the NYC Marathon in LIC for eons, 26.2 to be exact. And, when the moon is in the Seventh House and Jupiter aligns with Mars, we get these two monolithic events back to back. Night into day.
This is one of those years. Don’t forget to set your clocks back – next weekend, for an extra hour of fun, and mischief.
