Restaurants and real estate, that’s what’s been dominating the LIC news so far in 2013. Nothing new since last week on the former topic, and as for real estate, you can check out the links below, I seem to have stirred up enough trouble in my last article. But following through on that post regarding HPS, today I will focus on the park adjacent to it. If you have not walked by it recently, construction has been progressing smoothly and it is easy to see the outline of what is to come. As for the specifics, I have been told that while we will not be getting the advanced playground I advocated for, there will be a small conventional playground. In addition, there will be an oval field, half real grass, half artificial, for laying out and playing sports respectively. There will also be some half court basketball courts. Finally, this park is actually not an extension of Gantry State Park, instead it will be a city park and apparently run completely separately.
Since my push for something other than a toddler playground so far has been unsuccessful, here is a chance for you to have a voice in shaping the future of LIC. There is a Community Meeting next week which is open to all:
C’mon people, do you think you can have an event like this in Manhattan?
On Wednesday, January 16th at 7pm at the PS1 dome, representatives from the Department of Sanitation and Transportation and our local government officials will be meeting with the community to discuss:
1. street cleaning
2. converting 5th St. to one-way
3. sidewalk cafes in LIC

January 8, 2013 at 11:37 amOh that’s too bad about not having a playground for older children at the outset for the new HPS park, it was certainly a good idea. Hopefully things like the Community meeting can address local issues such as these so that they can be worked out with enough lead time.
