“There will be enough spaces for the kids who will be in the zone”
“We don’t expect to see a spike in kindergarten applicants for next year”
Rebecca Rawlins – DOE Director of Portfolio Planning
Well folks, it’s game time. Applications for kindergarten in NYC public schools begin being accepted today. In case you do not have complete faith in the statements made above, we here at LICtalk will also offer you two local private alternatives, because we don’t just bring you the news, we also analyze it and solve the problems of LIC. Also, if you are new to the neighborhood and have a child entering kindergarten in September 2013, we think you should definitely read our previous posts on “Schools.”
The first is called the Paideia School and it is located at 44-02 23rd Street in Long Island City. If you value small student-teacher ratios, this school has all others beat by a mile, including the heavyweights in Manhattan. One of the major advantages of this ratio, and the school’s philosophy of not adhering to a limited methodology, is that each child’s education can be individually customized, and thus not be at the mercy of the lowest-common-denominator. The cost is $15,000 a year, which may seem like alot of money, but anyone familiar with NYC private school pricing will recognize this as a tremendous bargain, and there is a reason: it is subsidized by the Mechner Foundation. There are a number of other very favorable attributes to the school, and I urge you to check out its website and schedule a visit to hear and see more if this seems appealing.
At the other end of the spectrum is St. Stanislaus Kostka Academy in Greenpoint. St. Stans is a traditional parochial school, and if you are alright with the doctrine it is really charming. Class sizes are reasonable, as is the price, and the school has all the amenities such as a science lab, computer lab, art and music classes, phys ed, and auditorium. Also, there is talk of a getting a private school bus to take the kids there if enough children from LIC attend. Once again, check out the website and schedule an appointment if this seems appealing.

January 22, 2013 at 9:09 pmYou really don’t think there will be enough seats for all the kindergarteners who apply with the addition of the new school?

January 23, 2013 at 8:56 amIt is really such a shame how our great neighborhood has insufficient capacity of such a critical component. It is why people are compelled not to stay.

January 28, 2013 at 10:24 pmThank you very much LICTALK for the two alternative school recommendations. It sadly sounds like having a backup plan to PS 78 is a necessity.
