We have lots of little local throwaways to end the week. Or maybe they’re actually really significant if you spin it right. I’ll take The Editor’s prerogative and lead with something I consider more than worthy by announcing that, as pictured above, there are now new backboards, rims, and …drum roll please …nets (!!!) on the 48th Avenue basketball courts. This much needed update plants the seed for LIC becoming the next basketball mecca.
//Gantry Park Landing residents received word this week to expect noise coming from the ground floor commercial space as a previously announced Urgent Care Center gets built out. Construction is scheduled to end by year end, so we could have a local place to fix that boo-boo come early 2016.
//A little follow-up thought to the LIC Summit: as mentioned by us earlier in the week, there was quite a bit of talk about the tightening of office space in the neighborhood, and how that’s now displacing warehouse and light industry. Today comes a story from Bloomberg, about how little office space there is in Brooklyn, and how desirable it’s become for companies to not have to rent in Manhattan. Price is the biggest differentiator, but so is a closer commute for many employees living nearby. As the stigma of not having a Manhattan address quickly fades, expect more cutting edge businesses to locate in LIC, thus pushing up the desirability to live here.
//MoMA PS1’s Warm-Up Series begins this Saturday. For previews and previous pics of this hedonistic affair, click below. But I believe my own one-liner from several year’s ago sums it up best:
“If you have never attended one of these, think 21st Century-Studio 54, egalitarian, hipster extravaganza, and you LIC residents, are the VIP’s: flash your creds and you are whooshed in gratis past the throngs at the velvet rope”
//While we’re on the topic of live music, once again LIC will have free concerts in Gantry Park. ‘Live at The Gantries,’ will occur every Tuesday night at 7pm starting July 7. ‘Sage Concerts’ will present jazz and classical every Thursday night at 7pm starting July 16 for four weeks, and then move to Sundays at 5pm and go electric with rock and pop. Full line-ups to be announced shortly. Bob Dylan will not be making an appearance.
Oh gosh, to think I was the tour photographer for the Stones and then was imbedded with the Marines in Iraq. Now look at my journalistic aspirations.
