AS headlines consistently scream about despair in distant locales such as Gaza and Ukraine (and Afghanistan where it never seems to end), here in LIC, Spring brings us a reminder about another tragedy unfolding much closer to home.
Once again Haitian mangoes are unavailable from the produce vendor located on 49th Avenue just off Vernon Boulevard. This year a deep dive is not needed to ascertain why, as news of the government’s being completely overrun by gangs came and went a month ago. No follow-up stories, no talk of peace plans, no protests, no flags or colors. Just mangoes, or lack thereof, from Haiti anyway.
//On Saturday afternoon I took a walkabout in a blustery Hunters Point South Park. In gazing out along the waters edge of the cove located between the still-closed luminescence art installation and the cantilevered platform, I noticed two small birds darting about in the water. They seemed much smaller than ordinary ducks, perhaps adolescents? Maybe, but their markings were quite unusual, almost skunk-like. I snapped a few very distant pics, and when I got home I googled to discover that I had happened upon a pair of Buffleheads.
Who knows what you’ll spot when you get out to our local parks, but it won’t be anything if you don’t go. Need a little motivation? The Hunters Point Parks Conservancy is sponsoring three nature walks in HPSP this Spring with a very knowledgeable environmental educator. The first one is this Friday, April 19 at 5pm. April 18, 2024 at 12:43 pmThe Eater list is a joke. It’s just their tired out schtick of “look how many different ethnic restaurants we can cram in!” And it has huge misses: Go Nonna, Manducatis, Manetta’s, Levante (hmmm, notice a pattern?), even everyone’s go-to LIC best Casa Enrique. And it’s an open question whether Eater just puts in the restaurants that pay them to. Bottom line, if you’re looking to eat in LIC, do your own research and ignore that article entirely.
