INDEPENDENCE Day is not just about barbecues and fireworks, it’s a reminder that when leadership from afar is not representative of local needs, something must be done. While I previously stated that the latest rezoning proposal for LIC will be dependent on the market, not the politicians, it does not mean that were they to come to fruition our needs should not be met.
Previously, rezoning was pushed by owners of the land, because if granted the land immediately becomes much more valuable, whether developed by the owners or sold. Because of that, the city asks for concessions from these owners. These days those concessions largely come in the form of affordable housing, which crowd out any other requests from the neighborhood. Thus, those paying full market rents and long term residents who own their own homes get scraps.
Which makes the complete omission of a rec center in this latest rezoning proposal all that more galling. You can hold all the community meetings that you want, they are simply not representative of most current residents who surround the rezoned areas. Instead, they reflect the wishes of people who have time to go to meetings. A small minority here in LIC.
