Sometimes I write stories that I know are more derivative of LIC than the usual drivel I scratch out. That’s my prerogative and this is one of those stories. In researching it I learned a lot more than the original subject matter.
Distance-wise, Long Island City High School is about as far as one can be from the location of the average LICtalk reader and still technically be in Long Island City. From a socio-economic perspective, that span is equally large.
Nevertheless the actual distance is only 1.8 miles as the crow flies. Likewise, the dreams of the kids who attend that high school are not too dissimilar from those of our own kids. [Read more…] about GYMNASTICS IS LIFE, IN LONG ISLAND CITY AND BEYOND

Despite the delays and cost overruns at the Hunters Point Library, I personally like it. I know that not everyone in the neighborhood shares my sentiment, some thinking it an overpriced folly and others questioning the need for any new libraries in the 21st century. But grand projects that may come across as impractical or wasteful at onset, can sometimes transcend their original purpose, as well as transform a neighborhood if the conceptualization of it is on target. Though there is no new website, a reader described the cuisine/menu [Read more…] about CRABHOUSE LIC MOLTS & IS NOW ‘THE LOFT’ W/ A LATIN MENU

A new restaurant serving Indian-Mexican fusion cuisine expects to open on Vernon Boulevard by the end of January. Named DesiBowl, it will be located in the space formerly occupied by the Paris Health Cafe next to St. Mary’s Church. The owner is Sabiha, who is currently a manager at OptimEyes Vision in LIC, and she told us to envision an Indian-style Chipotle, with burritos, tacos, rice bowls, paratha rolls, and Indian sandwiches, whereby the consumer chooses the rice, meat, toppings, etc. The restaurant will be spice-friendly as well as have a kid-friendly menu. This will be Sabiha’s first time opening her own restaurant, though her family owns ten pizzerias in the city.
