Well I’ve been training all summer for the monumental bike ride across the Queensboro Bridge. After many years of living in its shadow, it was time to take on the beast and journey across the river to the outer borough of Manhattan in something other than the subway or a taxi. So this weekend I ventured forth, first stopping at Sweetleaf to down a quart of coffee, then pausing in Queens Plaza to gobble two Clif Bars. Finally I strapped on my helmet and started pedaling up the eastern face. It was hot out and I had to rest several times and catch my breath, not unusual for most mountaineers, but 40 minutes later with my hamstrings screaming, I hit the apex. The trip down to the other side was quicker and less traumatic, at the bottom of the bridge I made a sharp right turn onto East 60th Street proudly hitting the island of Manhattan in a triumphal manner, and do you know what I discovered when I got there?
