The protests are winding down and now the real work begins, both in terms of reforms and making a living. Yet even if you’re no longer WFH, Summer 2020 increasingly has the feeling of staying at home, or staying close by. You can see that in the crowds along Vernon Blvd and in Gantry Park, and as people flock to the outdoors, a whole passel of new al fresco food options has gravitated to the LIC waterfront.
One of these is a Mexican food truck called Chinelos Birria Tacos. What are birria tacos? A delicacy that Pete Wells of The New York Times gave a truck in Jackson Heights serving them two stars to around six months ago, so you can read his description of birria in the link below. What I will tell you is that based on that description I’ve been meaning to get out to Jackson Heights since the review, but life happened and then Covid intervened.1.
Yet to twist a phrase, if you can’t make it to the food truck, sometimes the food truck comes to you. Lo and behold Chinelos appeared on Center Boulevard about two weeks ago. It is run by three partners who each have several years working on other Mexican food trucks and decided to strike out on their own. They chose to specialize in birria tacos after tasting them on a trip to LA and were taught the recipe by a local woman. They ended up choosing to locate in LIC after the positive experiences they had of working here previously.
While I don’t know when I’ll make it out to Jackson Heights, I do know that these tacos are very good. Most importantly make sure to order the broth to accompany it – es muy, muy, muy sabroso! Then you can walk them across the street and eat them in a location with the best view in the world – that alone is worth three stars Pete.
Chinelos Birria Tacos is on the corner of Center Boulevard and 49th Ave and open every day from lunch until late.
