The freezing weather has kiboshed the East River Ferry until further notice. After several boats required assistance and couldn’t land in several ports, I guess they decided to suspend service. Anyone who has seen the river in the past week, could not have failed to notice the huge chunks of ice on it and thought about the Titanic.
//It happened so fast: Friday we tweeted about the fatal beating the night before of a man on Vernon Boulevard. Sunday we tweeted again that the suspect turned himself in to police. In reading about it Friday, the few details that were known hinted that neither the victim nor suspect lived nearby. Nevertheless even as it turned out to be the case, one couldn’t help but empathize with the poor victim, an employee of Bareburger, and his young family. It could have been any of us.
//Finally, in a completely different twist for a local news site, we share word of a new economic idea that’s bringing it’s grassroots program to LIC: The Basic Income Movement. Basic-ally, it advocates for giving every one over the age of 18 say ten-grand a year. Before you start accusing me of not towing the independent journalistic line, let it be known that this concept has champions on both the left and the right. The latter view it as a means to streamline and easily quantify all the government handouts, and the former -well you know. So get yourself some modern-day learnin’ by attending this cutting edge discussion this Thursday, February 26 from 6:30 to 9pm at the LIC Art Center: 44-02 23rd St., Studio 205
