THE NYS Parks Department has reserved the eastern basketball court on 48th Avenue (by Vernon Boulevard) for ‘Girls Time’ every Wednesday and Friday from 4pm to 5:15pm beginning April 23 through June 25, 2021.
While there is no formal program, this will be a chance for girls to get together on the basketball courts without the usual distractions, interference, and maybe even intimidation they might feel about breaking in cold to a typical public court.
The court is open to all girls1 and there is no cost or registration necessary, but there are strict Covid protocols. Thus attendance is limited to 14 girls per daily session, first come first served.
In addition, all girls must wear masks, no parents or spectators are allowed inside the fenced in court area, no food allowed and kids must have their own water bottle. Finally temperature checks will be taken before admittance, do not bring your child if they are not in good health and/or are experiencing symptoms consistent with Covid-19.

April 27, 2021 at 7:43 amMasks, distancing, temperature checks. All for people — young people — who are at zero risk. Plus, we know with absolute certainty now that masks and social distancing are useless, especially outdoors.
Wearing a mask during athletic activity is far more harmful than any “risk” from Covid in this situation.
And yes, parents, if your eight year old is going around with a mask on, it’s child abuse.
