TONY Bennett died last week at the age of 96 at his home in Manhattan. Though he was raised in Astoria, he was born at St. John’s Hospital in Long Island City. Leading the newsroom here at LICtalk to wonder ‘Where is St. John’s Hospital?”
The answer, not surprisingly, is that St. John’s Hospital is no more. But when it was, it’s location was at the intersection of Jackson Avenue and 45th Avenue. Which is where the tower fka The Citigroup Building is located.
Not that the Citigroup Building displaced the hospital when the former was built in the late 1980’s. St. John’s Hospital had flown the coop back in 1961 after merging with another now-defunct hospital in Elmhurst.
Yet for 61 years this location served as one of the largest providers of healthcare in Queens for the disadvantaged. And on August 3, 1926 a baby named Anthony Benedetto was born here. The rest is history.
//BACK in May an astute reader pointed out that instant delivery company ‘Fridge No More’ closed their outlet on 45th Avenue and 11th Street. Same reader then pointed out in July that instant delivery company Gorilla closed their outlet on 48th Avenue and 11th Street. Zero percent interest rates made them explode, unworkable business models made them implode, life in LIC goes on.
