Look, I get it man, your publishers breathing down your neck for a lede and there isn’t a darn thing happening. You can’t make stuff up – you’re working for a news organization, not in politics – how else do you get blood from a stone? The best response is to look at your surroundings, dig deep, and recognize something that may be out of the ordinary and of interest to you. There’s a good chance it’s of interest to others as well. Warning: this might require some spade work! The second best response is to value your readers time and publish nothing. The third choice, and it’s not in the ‘Best’ category, is to push out product. With that, I present this month’s edition of “Is This News LIC?’
Amazon Considering Huge Brooklyn Location – it’s not LIC, is this still news? Only if you’ve been hiding under a rock the past year. Don’t fret, it’s only a logistics facility, but it’s also 1 mil sq ft – and you know where they’re definitely not putting it – LIC, or Queens for that matter!
Two Men Sought For Swiping a Woman’s Cellphone on LIC Subway Platform – is this news? Hmm, there was no mention of anyone being hurt and it allegedly happened almost 3 weeks prior to publication. Smells like teen product
Free Spirits? Or ‘Idiots’ of the East River – interesting story about the ever-increasing ‘pirates’ jet-skiing along the LIC waterfront. Observe, investigate, write it up – Journalism 101 – Yes, this is news LIC
Police Looking For 7-Train Rider Who Touched Himself While Looking at Another Passenger – this gem was published two months after it supposedly occurred, possibly in Long Island City, possibly elsewhere in transit. Is this news? Not for LIC, but maybe for David Pecker. No, not even for him
Yet More Free Concerts Coming to Gantry Park This Summer – a second concert series has been announced for Gantry Park, Sundays at 5:30pm. Is this news? ‘Yes’ if you live in LIC, because more is betterY
