AFTER six weeks of pre-season games where hope springs eternal, 18 weeks of 11×11 hard-hitting full tackle winnowing of the parity pack (w/ NYC & Carolina taking a pass on this phase), and three weekends of blissful playoffs, it’s the Chiefs and the Niners. The pizza and wings of elite NFL teams in the 2020’s. In fact when these two teams actually met in the Super Bowl, the pandemic was not. Picture it, February 2020, Patrick Mahomes was not on television 24/7, nor a recognized name by most Americans. While his counterpart on the 49’ers did have some name recognition as the permanent understudy for Mr. Super Bowl himself, Tom Brady. Such innocent times back then, no?
Let’s get back to those pizza and wings. Before we consume that traditional game day feast, we need to set a base for the beer consumption that ensues during the 4-hour pregame show. And since there are some dying embers of a New Year’s resolution to get in shape still smoldering, per chance you may have opted to walk over to get your brunch feedbag on, instead of dialing for delivery? And what better to both set that base and rehydrate from the night before? Why juice n bagels!
Alas, I guess not everybody was on this page. Because Juice N’ Bagels on Vernon Boulevard is closing for good on February 1, despite having just opened in April 2023. Located on the corner of 50th Avenue, right above the subway, this is the second highly prominent location to open in Spring 2023 and close inside of a year, Casa Lola being the other. Whether it’s concept or execution, or some combination of both, I don’t think it’s due to a decline in LIC traffic or business in general. Casa Enrique is packed every night of the week. Anyway, I guess the silver-lining is we have a pair of highly anticipated openings to look forward to in the months ahead. And for those needing instant gratification (and without a life), we’ve got the Pro-Bowl next weekend, yee-haw!

February 8, 2024 at 7:58 amThe economy is broken. Food costs are going thru the roof. Labor costs are unsustainable, and compounding that—rents are insane.
It’s going to get worse.
