FOR some people in Long Island City, a monumental change came last week. For others, a bigger change will occur this week. I calculate the breakdown between these two distinct groups to be roughly 50% to 48%, with the remaining two percent delusional. 50-48 is a really close game if we were talking football or high school basketball. Certainly not a blowout. I digress.
Starbucks is finally opening its 10-01 50th Avenue outpost this Friday. Formerly the home of Juice n Bagels and Dorian’s Diner, and situated at the foot of the Vernon Jackson subway station’s Manhattan bound entrance, this marquee location is well positioned to hoover up the caffeinated demands of on-the-move morning commuters. Whether that’s medium roast or dark; americano, cappuccino, espresso, machiatto or latte; Caramel Brulee, Chestnut Praline, Gingerbread, Pumpkin Spice, or Cinnamon Dolce; whole milk, skim milk, half-n-half, almond, oat, coconut, soy, or hemp milk; hot or cold; it is right there and available Friday, forever altering the (everyday) lives of many.
//Malt Drive is the subject, topic one is an Affordable Housing Lottery. 173 apartments up for grabs, not quite on the water but pretty darn close, and that’s a large number greatly increasing the odds of winning the lottery. And what do the winners get? Brand new rent-stabilized apartments and all those amenities priced at $2,890 for one-bedrooms and $3,590 for two-bedrooms. “You can save an average of $100,000-plus over five years compared to what you would pay for the same apartment with market-rate rent” says the article below, Who am I to argue?
In the meantime, Malt Drive is throwing a shindig at their new outdoor park this Saturday from 1:30-4pm. You’ll have to endure a few pols and their extols, but that’ll be mitigated by the free beer and prosecco that will be served. You can’t get that at Starbucks!
//Queens Tech Night will be held at Culture Lab (indoors) on Tuesday November 26 at 6:30pm. I don’t know if there will be free beer and prosecco, but it is free to attend. Get tickets now at the link below.
//The construction never ends, until it does. Court Square Park will be undergoing a renovation slated to begin next week. This highly overlooked park is sitting right in the middle of many a new high rise. No they are not installing pickleball courts, check out what they are doing below.
Hunters Point Library has closed off a good portion of it’s entry-way sitting spaces to begin construction to make it ADA compliant. Expect it to take a year.
