THIS weekend and every weekend the weather is amenable there will be live comedy shows at the mini-amphitheater in the eastern end of Murray Park in Long Island City. The performances are free and slated to start at 6pm on both Saturdays and Sundays, but follow the instagram account @2Small2FailComedy for confirmation and the lineup for each evening.
Anthony Mendieta-Zamora, a Queens native, decided to produce this outdoor comedy event in LIC about a month and a half ago. As someone who had done stand-up himself, pre-COVID, he realized that all the popular, outdoor comedy events were in Brooklyn or Manhattan. Zoom shows weren’t cutting it for him and Queens is such an underrated location, he thought it would be a great idea to host a show here. Murray Playground is the perfect venue because it has this stage-like area surrounded by benches, providing the perfect set up for a show.
Per Beatriz Benares who’s the official photographer and marketing the shows “Anthony invested in a mic, a mic stand, a speaker, and some lights and got started immediately. The show started off by drawing in local comedians but grew to attract LIC locals and comedians from all over the city. We even have some regulars who stumbled into the park one night and have decided to keep coming back. Headliners such as Derek Gaines (seen on The Last OG and The King of Staten Island), Sam Morril (Comedy Central), and Usama Siddiquee (America’s Got Talent) have performed, and this weekend we have Michael Rowland (Comedy Central) and Neko White (Tru TV) headlining Saturday and Daniel Simonsen (Colbert) and Kerryn Feehan (Comedy Central) Sunday.
Oh, and to bring it all back home, Beatriz & Anthony attended LIC’s Baccalaureate School For Global Education together.
