WELL we’re midway through the Festival of Lights and I’m happy to report there have only been five related apartment fires in LIC so far. In other local holiday news, you may have noticed that we’ve been putting out fewer posts in the past month. That’s because we’ve outsourced our employees to Amazon Santa in order to help make toys for the Xmas rush – a newsroom being the perfect place to find cheap labor.
Not that readers have missed much in our seasonal news gap. In the case of Amazon continuing to haunt LIC, we kind of covered that a month ago. The NY Times ‘The Hunt’ column on a newlywed couple searching/choosing among three LIC apartments to purchase? All I can say when looking at the $860k price tag for a one bedroom is ‘Gulp.’ Sure it’s a new-build with some newfangled tech bells and whistles, but it’s also located in Court Square and only 600 square feet. For that rich price in a ‘mehh’ neighborhood the developer could have at least ‘thrown-in’ an extra bathroom and still made out like a bandit while preserving marital harmony. Nevertheless, for every sale like this there are probably 15-20 similar units sitting vacant in LIC. Finally in a fitting endpoint to this column, and maybe 2020, the 108th Precinct will be captained by the NYPD’s “first female of color” commanding officer. Welcome to the neighborhood Lavonda Wise, and congratulations.
//TIS the Season – Rockefeller had Diego Rivera and LIC has Daniel Bonilla. Now’s your chance to be a local benefactor and permanently leave your mark on LIC in the form of a 368 square foot mural titled ‘They Are Us’ going up on 41st Ave. Trust me, it’s a heckuva lot cheaper than what Rockie paid Diego and a what a cookie-cutter 1-bdrm nearby costs. December 16, 2020 at 2:36 pm“We essentially won the lotto, the Amazon lotto. Unfortunately, it didn’t go through,” said Eric Benaim, CEO of Modern Spaces.
He says Long Island City is thriving even after losing out on the Amazon deal. His company has sold more than 500 residential units in 2019, almost double the number in all of 2018.

December 16, 2020 at 5:21 pmLIC is not thriving at all. We need businesses to add foot traffic to the area. We need small businesses to survive and then thrive. We need leaders to be open to opportunity, even if it’s not perfect. This area should be the catalyst to the economy post-COVID, not an area left behind.
