
IT’S been three years since the Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks “officially” took place in Long Island City, which in LIC years is about a decade. Thus for all you newcomers to the neighborhood, here’s a primer for what some locals call the ‘Big Dance,’ and others refer to as the ‘Super Bowl,’ and yet a third contingent calls ‘Smoke On The Water.’
The first thing you’ll notice is Porta-Potties, lots of Porta-Potties. The next thing to expect is people. Lotsa people! With lotsa people come lotsa police, and with lotsa police come barricades – yes, lots of them. What you won’t see is cars. NO cars in the no-fly zone that is Long Island City on July 4th. But you will see flying vehicles in the no-fly zone, otherwise known as helicopters, and there will be quite a few of them – more than normal, but not a lot. Boats, once again lots of boats, including a fire boat spraying colored water to warm up the crowd – but no MC’s. Nevertheless when it comes to July 4th in Long Island City, I leave you with these words:
