Next Tuesday, September 22, at 6pm there will be a Participatory Budgeting (PB) neighborhood assembly in the auditorium at PS78Q.1 PB is where our local councilman lets you decide how to spend $1 million on community improvements to parks, schools, libraries, streets, and more. It’s not quite that simple, there’s a whole process in place to make sure it doesn’t end up in your Uncle Lou the contractor’s pocket, but it’s the starting point for ideas. So here are two suggestions for LIC.
One, adding 8-ft basketball hoops to the gym at PS78. Beginning last week this gym will now be used regularly by 2nd graders during the school day. In addition, it is now being used by younger kids for a local weekend basketball program. Unfortunately kids this young can’t even come close to the basket, and thus find the game frustrating. The Dalton School made a similar addition to bring the Dribbl youth basketball program in, and my estimate is it would cost around $20K max.
Secondly, using funds to create a fantastic playground for older kids in Hunters Point Phase 2. A much needed addition to the neighborhood, and something that can be used by all the children throughout Western Queens. Let’s put an iconic and unforgettable playground into an unbelievable setting. $200,000 should get the ball rolling on this, and if needed additional funds can be kicked in by the Parks Department. Trust me, everyone is going to want to take credit for this if it’s done right.
//Sirona Dental to Merge with Dentsply – for most of you in LIC, this headline is meaningless. What I find interesting is that a $5.5 billion market cap company is headquartered in an innocuous building near LaGuardia College. Now, those headquarters will be moved down to their merger partners office in York, PA. Though I don’t think they had many employees in LIC (or stateside for that matter), I’ll miss their press releases every time I google “Long Island City,” as I was always under the impression that it was some penny stock.
