ACCORDING to a sign on the facade, Stillwell Supply has been in existence since 1933. No more. Located in a single-story freestanding building occupying the corner of Vernon Boulevard and 44th Drive, it now stands empty and the phone goes unanswered.
Stillwell was a business that definitely had an old-school LIC vibe. It sold, rented, and serviced items such as abrasives, bar benders, bolt cutters, compressors, generators, grinders, hammers & breakers, mixers, pumps, & sprayers, sandblasters, scrapers, & scabblers. Yeah scabblers! Though the business dates to 1933, its current site was built in 1953. Given the retail malaise and out of the way location, it could be one of those buildings that stays empty for years…
