In light of the local LIC school hubbub, focused around the almost sure death of the PS78 middle school, there have been a lot of suggestions going around on a large email chain as to how to secure more capacity/another school, and possibly stave off the elimination.

Wow, it’s already the bottom of the 9th for the middle school

LIC is getting a new bikeway thanks to it’s winning an allocation of $500,000 from the participatory budgeting process.  Didn’t know this was such a great need, but maybe you can discern more from the blurb advocating it on the ballot:

Long Island City Bikeway – elements of a bike path exist already, an improved safe and reliable bike way system would increase the level of bike use, reduce cars using path for parking and enhance the neighborhood.

PS78 TO ELIMINATE MIDDLE SCHOOL, UNLESS NEW SCHOOL BUILT

No school, no pic

About a year ago I was on the subway with an acquaintance of mine when the talk turned to schools.  His oldest was in 4th or 5th grade, and he and his wife were frantic/frazzled/worried over and about where she would be attending middle school.  Being in my own kid triage bubble, I thought to myself ‘Gee, I never really realized what a hassle/headache/nightmare it is to apply to NYC public middle schools, and all the fuss over a 10-year old!’

Which quickly got me thinking ‘Wow, we have it really good in Long Island City, because our school is one of the very few in the whole city that runs K-8.’  And for the next year I added it to my list of plusses in touting LIC to all my friends considering moving here.
