LIC’s version of Woodstock is coming to Court Square this August and September. The Daily News has fleshed out their story we linked to on Wednesday, and revealed that a combo music/film festival will be held on the empty lot across from Linc LIC this August and September. Thursday nights will be dedicated to movies, and Saturday to live music, so it’s really going to be more like a mash-up of Woodstock and Cannes. LIC ARTS OPEN STARTS TODAY
The Fourth Annual LIC Arts Open begins today and runs through Sunday. The five-day event includes art exhibitions, a roster of innovative dance, theater and music performances, and a host of children’s activities. Events are almost all free. For this year’s main event, Open Studios (May 17 and 18), over 160 artists will open their studio doors to offer visitors a glimpse into the seldom seen world of the artist at work.
The above is from the press release, now let me add a little LICtalk flavoring. This is Long Island City’s version of Art Basel, [Read more…] about LIC ARTS OPEN STARTS TODAY
LIVE FROM LIC: IT’S THE PLANET OF THE APES
Have you noticed the huge film crew on 5th Street in Hunters Point this week? Given the size and the staging, it’s definitely not here to film an episode of some dramedy on a third tier cable channel. Whatever it is, I probably wouldn’t recognize the names of any of the stars today anyway, unlike say Charlton Heston, Roddy McDowall, or Linda Lovelace. I mean it’s not like the memorable movies of yesteryear, such as The Planet of the Apes. Which of course was filmed in LIC. [Read more…] about LIVE FROM LIC: IT’S THE PLANET OF THE APES
MORE 5POINTZ STUFF & RAMEN FEVER COMES TO LIC
“Better late than never” does not apply to the huge wave of publicity regarding 5Pointz in the last three days. All of a sudden the mainstream press has caught on to the magnitude of this story, and is now covering every detail of the follow-up to Tuesday’s whitewashing. Too late folks, the game is over. We could have used your eloquent eulogies before the judgments were handed down.
As for those of us in LIC, most people are resigned to, or indifferent towards, the fact that gentrification marches on. Speaking of, a pop-up ramen shop has opened in Hunters Point. Hooray, there is a silver lining.
Mu Ramen – will open Wednesday, Nov. 20 at 6 p.m. at Bricktown Bagels, 51-06 Vernon Blvd., Long Island City. Hours of operation this week will be Wednesday through Saturday 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., and will be Tuesday through Saturday beginning next week and after, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.

5POINTZ PAINTED OVER IN WHITE OVERNIGHT
It’s over folks, the saga of 5Pointz is no more. I’m sad to report that my prediction of its not seeing Thanksgiving came true. Last night under police protection, the owners of the building had the exterior painted in white. The murals are gone and the 7-train gateway to Queens is camouflaged in anticipation of its being torn down. There are innumerable articles from news sources everywhere. Check out the two links I have provided from the two NY/National papers. They have photos of the whitewashing, and are indicative of how this is not just a local, or city, or national story, but worldwide. Not much more to say on it, at this point even Yogi Berra would be speechless.
