Spring Has Sprung in LIC

Spring has sprung and with it has brought a tsunami of flowers and news to LIC.  Amongst other stories you can learn where to stash your excess Picassos and Rembrandts now that all the walls in your 700′ square foot two-bedroom are covered with your children’s finger-paintings and “murals.”  Also, while new trees are certainly a nice contribution to the ‘hood, when it comes to currying my favor I’m more the Open Bar type.  In a similar vein, Friends of Gantry Park is looking for 400 Andrew Jackson’s.  There’s also a cool profile on an old School LIC pioneer.  Finally, as if they really need any more publicity, a link to the new M. Wells joint that’s opening in May.

Remember Where You Heard It First

There are a lot of major news organizations playing catch-up on the Corner Bistro LIC opening, and for that matter jumping on the Long Island City bandwagon in general.  As always they are a day, week, month, year, decade, or occasional century late.  I mean wouldn’t you just want to kill yourself if you had awakened this morning, read the Wall Street Journal, and found out that the Corner Bistro had opened up two friggin’ weeks ago?  Of course you would …well maybe not if you gave up meat for Lent, then actually you might be very happy to have been in an LIC-free cocoon, but I am a devil-worshipping carnivore who…  Ok, I’m getting distracted from all the other important LIC news that has accumulated since my week in St. Bart.  In addition to late-comers to the CB story I give you another addition to Vernon Boulevard, Astoria vs. LIC, and da G-train.  Plus a pic of our new High School going up on the water which I hear is going to be named after Jeremy Lin, remember where you heard it first!

Casa Enrique has opened

Casa Enrique opened for business last night.  The awning still says “Bistro” so maybe they are taking a page from their neighbor right around the corner and will fill a dual niche: Mexican Cafe/French Bistro.  Could be the next fusion frenzy …nah probably not, but check it out anyway.

In other LIC news I give you condos, tacos, higher taxes, and saving the best for last PS78(spoiler alert: nothing conclusive).  Thought: there are now three Mexican places in Hunters Point, what a bounty!  For that you get no photo with todays post!

Like alot of tri-state boys, my dream growing up was to play for the Yankees and/or play lead guitar in a hard rock quartet(think Led Zeppelin, but of my own ilk).  Like alot of tri-state boys those dreams never quite materialized and slowly over the years I had to console myself with increasingly smaller dreams and achievements: Christie Brinkley, not to be, Debbie Harry circa 21st Century maybe.  Alot of that consoling was done at the other end of 12th Street from where I lived in the east village, the Corner Bistro.  Back then you could smoke in bars and hamburgers had yet to become the “it” culinary item.  Much has changed since those days, probably the least of which has been my moving out to LIC.  Then last summer I heard rumblings about the Corner Bistro opening its first outpost ever in LIC and upon seeing its green awning go up a month ago, I knew I had finally made it to the major leagues.Image
