A double headline, one surprising, one anything but. The news of Joe Conley’s resignation from Community Board 2 after 23 years, was unexpected and sudden. Under normal circumstances, a reign of that duration usually ends with months of boozy goodbye celebrations at night, replete with cigars and backslapping. Followed by hungover days ferrying around to local public schools and senior citizen centers to pick up newly contrived award plaques. There’s also usually a handpicked and groomed successor. Unless there’s a big scandal, in which case a pol gets a new high-paying job in the private sector, $50,000 a pop multi-city speech tour, and frequently a newer, younger wife. This time we got neither, which feels exactly like when the roulette ball lands on green, ‘huh?’
According to Grub Street, Mu Ramen was packed on opening night, with wait times between 30 and 45 minutes. Can’t say that was unanticipated, but here’s a little tip for those of us who live in LIC: go on a freezing Monday night in January. Nobody travels and for locals you can waltz right in.
Talking about traveling, there’s a new book by Adrienne Onofri, a writer from Astoria/Elmhurst, called Walking Queens. Each walk she recommends tells the story of a neighborhood: how it originally was formed, and how it was developed. You can see more here.
Also, tomorrow night there is a grand opening of a new arts venue. Grand Central Atelier will hold an Open House on Friday, December 6, from 6-10 pm at 4606 11th Street. All are welcome, and refreshments will be served.
