IT’S always darkest before the dawn. Just when LIC thought we would pass the summer without ice cream, a newcomer springs up. Emack & Bolio’s is coming to 5-36 50th Avenue in Long Island City, taking the location of the quickly shuttered Ample Hills Creamery. What is Emack & Bolio’s?
Originating in Boston in 1975, Emack & Bolio’s serves premium ice cream and has ~20 locations including three in Manhattan that have been around for awhile. While the names of their flavors aren’t quite as clever as those of Ample Hills (RIP), take my word for it: the taste still rocks! Check it out when they open their doors in the next week or two.
//BLOSSOMING – that’s what happens in Spring right? Yes, and we have more restaurant openings to share here in Long Island City. First off, is Knock Knock at 42-44 Crescent Street in Queensboro Plaza. Opening today, this Izakaya-style establishment serves Asian tapas (for lack of a better analogy). In other words smaller bites and snacks meant to be paired with drinks in an informal setting. And though meant to be informal, the build-out is quite extensive. Better yet, it’s NOT part of a chain, even a mini-chain. Instead it’s the brainchild of a young husband and wife team originally from China, now settled in NYC, and well-versed in LIC. Check it out!
Other places to check out are The North Bowl, which is currently undergoing a soft-opening, and Gulp – a new Taiwanese restaurant coming soon to 42-45 27th Street and also in Queensboro Plaza.
Finally, just like the Emack for Ample swap, for everyone that opens one must close. With that comes the news that the City will be demolishing The Water’s Edge Restaurant, the empty hull sitting on the East River by 44th Drive. Cue the memories.
