SOMETIMES I think I should just write for Eater. The owners of Fer Restaurant in LIC located north of the bridge, will be taking their culinary skills south of the bridge. Way south, having just signed a lease in the new Malt Drive development at the bottom of Hunters Point.
In addition to noodle soups and noodles without soup, their first restaurant has less prosaic offerings. You want Bitter Melon Salad? They got that. Extra Beef Tripe or Pork Intestine? Throw it on. Sliced Chicken Gizzard? Oh yeah!
The fun doesn’t end there for Malt Drive residents. Stepping Stone Cafe just opened, in sync with the arrival of the first tenants. Coffee before noodles, you gotta walk before you run.
//NO, this is not just an extension of Eater – Queens edition. In addition to coffee and noodles, residents of Malt Drive will soon have a brand new elementary school at their doorstep. In 2028 anyway, giving them plenty of time to start procreating.
In other non-restaurant news, I was surprised to read that the large newly built red brick colossal in the Warehouse District filed for bankruptcy. Here I thought that Pickleball would save everyone. Alas, even this lease signing was not enough to overcome the byzantine financing that frequently envelopes and overwhelms seemingly sound occupancy.
Finally comes the news of a raid on a hotel in Long Island City. Heretofore, I was unaware that there was a Howard Johnson’s hotel in LIC. And not just any HoJo’s, but a ‘Mayflower’ Howard Johnson’s. Which must be their upscale brand? Probably not, given the 1.5 star reviews on Yelp. Which I suggest you do not read unless you really want to go down that Rabbit Hell. Alas (once again), no sign of clam strips at this hotel.
