Silent night, holy night
All is calm, all is bright
Round yon virgin mother and child
Holy Infant so tender and mild
Sleep in heavenly peace
Sleep in heavenly peace
OK we’ve got the solemn out of the way, let’s bring on the festive. Not so fast, because we here at LICtalk are always thinking about the long game. So before we sit down to our figgy pudding and roast beast followed by port and cigars, a suggestion about the future1 via a post from the past.
Way back in the year 2013, we mildly requested that you give consideration to an idea to help save the planet, country, and community. A little early perhaps, but today this idea has come to full fruition and we are removing both the ‘mildly’ and ‘request’ and halting just shy of an edict. We are thus declaring 2022 The Year of No Gifts.
Forget about the items themselves, between the cost and exhaust of logistics and the waste of the packaging do you really get incremental satisfaction from ‘stuff?’ Making this task all the easier these days is the proliferation of ‘Buy Nothing’ groups and other social network thingamajigs that did not exist back in 2013. So yes, we were ahead of our time – as we frequently are – but always filled with good intentions here at LICtalk. Now bring on the dancing girls!
//High School Kids Needed – the Long Island City Youth Sports League is looking for local 11th & 12th grade girls and boys interested in being assistants for a youth basketball program at PS78Q this winter. It is a paid position ($100 per 3.5 hour session) every Sunday afternoon from January thru March. Familiarity with the game helpful but expertise not required. Please contact licyouthsports@gmail.com if interested.
//Volleyball In Hunters Point This Winter – while everyone may know that The Editor has played on the circuit, they may not know that volleyball classes &/or games are available for adults (and teenagers) at all levels in the High School on Center Boulevard (ACTVF) in the evenings beginning in January. The cost is $150 for a 6-session course and I believe classes are held on Tuesday or Thursday evenings from 7pm to 9pm depending on level. Contact Louise Ganitis at louganitis@gmail.com for more info and to register.
