It’s time to forget about subways and affordable housing, the weekend is here. With that in mind comes word from the LIC Partnership that there’s a new restaurant on Jackson Avenue called Mr. Nilsson. Ok, it’s not really a completely new restaurant. In quickly googling the address, I noticed that it was the same one as ‘Sage General Store.’ So I gave them a call and spoke to the owner, Leslie Nilsson. She told me that they renovated the location over MLK weekend, and that Mr. Nilsson is a restaurant within a restaurant and will serve a completely separate menu for dinner than the one served during the day at Sage General. In fact, there will be new chefs for dinner, who according to the restaurant’s website, had previously cooked at Eleven Madison and Momofuku. Ooh fancy, I better bring my bib.
As if that wasn’t enough to get you fired up, this Saturday at The Local Hostel from 7-10pm is Queens Brewers Night. Big Alice, Finback, Rockaway, Singlecut and Transmitter Breweries will be serving up their latest brews for one night only. Enjoy live music from local bands Fairways, Hips & Brows, and Fuxida.
Finally, because good news comes in threes, we’re throwing in a special annual event this weekend at the Bohemian Beer Hall called Porkfest:
“Masopust” (porkfest) is an age long Bohemian and Moravian tradition going back all the way to the 13th century. These three days are filled with excessive eating, drinking, and dancing as it is believed that if a person ate and drank a great amount during these festive days, good health would accompany them for the entire year.
As if I needed an incentive to overindulge!

March 12, 2015 at 10:28 pmThe bartender at mrnilsson is planning a lime in a coconut concoction along with a lot of amazing new drinks. An aquavit and tonic that has handmade herbaceous ingredients in the tonic that blew us away tonight. And Harry Nilsson, rest his soul, would be proud, because the chefs have taken the idea of the Sage General Store’s beloved chicken and mac & cheese and turned it into a chicken roulade with a mac and cheese espuma (aka a light airy sauce) and IT IS AMAZING! Like, can’t stop thinking about it amazing. Like $16 and you are eating the lightest, uber delicious version of chicken & mac and cheese you didn’t even know you could imagine.
